It is a simple keystroke and mouse activity (moves, clicks and drags) recording program. Recorder files, can contain a number of recordings, or "macros", which can playback a set of keystrokes or mouse activities. You can use these to simplify otherwise complex or time consuming procedures.
For example, if your word processor does not allow you to set alternate headers and footers for odd and even pages, you could record a set of macros which could produce left and right handed versions of your footers and print just odd or even pages.
The Recorder package consists of three files, RECORDER.EXE, RECORDER.DLL and RECORDER.HLP. These come as part of the standard Windows 3.x package. (Look for the camera and cassette icon in your Accessories Group in Program Manager.)
Apart from the help file (RECORDER.HLP), documentation in later variants of Windows 3.x, is non-existent. For most people the help file is all they've got. Although the procedures it explains are accurate, they are not put in context so can be difficult to understand.

| NOTE: RECORDER is not included in Windows 95, NT, or other versions later than 3.x. The Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q136206 explains the functionality is offered through the "Microsoft Test for Windows" product. I understand this costs hundreds of dollars and is only appropriate for heavy duty professional programmers. There are shareware offerings available for these more recent 32 bit operating systems. Look at the Files for Download page for links to sites from where you can download them. I have not tested these. Do not expect macros available from this site to be compatable with these Win95 programs. |
